Seams Sew Easy to use 1/4″ seams for accuracy in quilt block piecing, but how can I achieve the ideal 1/4″ seam?

This is a frequent and important question. Does it really matter about using 1/4 inch seam allowances? Yes it does matter and it can make a lot of difference in the finished product.

It is well worth the time it takes to be consistent in your 1/4″ seam allowances. Some machines have a setting for the 1/4″ seam which is awesome! You can set your machine on this setting and using the edge of your presser foot as a guide with the edge of your fabric and stitch your seams! This produces an accurate 1/4″ seam.

I recently purchased Seams Sew Easy by Riley Blake Designs. This is a plastic flower shaped template that fits on your sewing machine with the centre line and 1/4″ on either side of it. Around the lines the template has 1/2″ gridlines.

Seams Sew Easy is a flower shaped plastic template that you attach to your machine bed with adhesive or washi tape.
Seams Sew Easy

Seams Sew Easy saves time when you are piecing HST blocks OR when you are making No Waste Flying Geese blocks, because you can use the 1/4″ lines as your guide and stitch your seams without having to mark the diagonal centre line. No more drawing lines for me!

You can use Seams Sew Easy all of the time for that matter, because it has the 1/4″ markings on it. You just need to make sure that your needle is in the centre position. And I even take my ruler and just double check the seam allowance, just to make sure.

Where can you buy a Seams Sew Easy template?

Fat Quarter Shop is the place to buy one! You may also be able to find one in your local quilt shop. Lori Holt is the designer, so where her quilting supplies are sold you would be able to find one, I am sure! You can also find one at Riley Blake Designs.
